Damp proofing
Find the way in, then shut it off
Unlike rising damp, which comes up from the ground, penetrating damp comes in sideways through the outside of the building. It usually shows as a damp patch that gets worse after rain, often part-way up a wall or around a window, chimney or roofline rather than at the very bottom.
The common culprits are cracked or blown render, failed pointing, defective flashing, blocked or leaking gutters and downpipes, and gaps around window and door frames. The key to fixing penetrating damp is finding exactly where the water is getting in, because treating the inside wall without stopping the outside fault just lets it come back. We locate the source, put the external fault right and then make good the affected plaster inside.
